The Stroke of Pain: Turning A Mother’s Suffering Into a Lifelong Mission

4th August, 2019, A day that always reminds me of the pain I had to experience after receiving the call, “Nana, Mama anya Stroke”.

That was the day I really felt how vulnerable we are as humans when it comes to our health.

The suffering of a dear one, their plans, their ambitions, their energy, their joy… all halted in a blink. That is how serious and dangerous stroke is and we need to rise up and create the Advocacy now.

As we commemorate WORLD STROKE DAY, many might not know about it because all the attention is on Breast Care but tell a minute to process the effect of Stroke. It’s really an ordeal we must all come together to help Advocate, Prevent and Help people in the condition because it may be knocking at the door.

As we mark today on the global calendar on Stroke, I want to humbly announce the STROKE CARE FOUNDATION, an NGO created to create Awareness, Support and Care for people living with Stroke in Ghana.
You might be wondering what stroke is? It’s a neurological illness that affects the brain and nervous system of the body, paralyzing parts of the body, speech and other organs.

My experience with my mother has awoken the need to be an Advocate so as to help reduce spread the word and support others. I edge you to join me on this journey to make a difference.

This year’s theme is , “ActFAST”, yes you need to Act FAST – FACE, ARM, SPEECH, TIME.
When you feel your FACE suddenly dropping, your ARMS sudden shaking and feeling weak, your SPEECH slurred, then it’s TIME to call emergency for help. Get the needed support from your immediate family, friends and people to avoid the danger that comes with Stroke.

Check your Blood Pressure regularly to ensure it’s stable, be on the look out for Diabetes, Eat Healthy, stay physically active, avoid smoking, limit alcohol intake and manage your stress level. This can help reduce the risk of Stroke to a larger extent.

I edge all Government Agencies of Health, Stakeholders in the Health Sector, Corporate Entities, Individuals and the General Public to help and assist in making this Awareness drive reach everyone as we are all at risk. Together we can make a difference.
